The Certifications That Matter for Gaming Headsets
There are dozens of certifications in the global electronics market, but for gaming headsets, eight of them cover 95% of the markets you'll sell into. Let's go through each one in detail.
CE Marking (European Union)
What it is: The CE mark is a mandatory conformity marking for products sold in the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes the 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. CE stands for "Conformité Européenne" (European Conformity).
What it covers: For gaming headsets, CE compliance involves three directives:
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU: For wireless headsets (Bluetooth, 2.4GHz). Covers safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio spectrum efficiency.

FCC Certification (United States)

Selling a product with someone else's FCC ID without authorization is a violation that can result in fines and product seizure.
RoHS (European Union)
What it is: RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. Directive 2011/65/EU restricts the use of ten hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)
- Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
- Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

REACH (European Union)
What it is: REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 is the EU's comprehensive chemicals management regulation. It's broader and more complex than RoHS.
What it covers: All chemicals manufactured in or imported into the EU, including chemicals used in electronic products. For gaming headsets, the key REACH requirements are:
- SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern): The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) maintains a list of SVHCs that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic to reproduction, or environmentally persistent. As of 2026, the list contains over 240 substances. If any SVHC is present in your product at a concentration above 0.1% by weight, you must notify ECHA and inform your customers.

BQB (Bluetooth SIG Qualification)
What it is: BQB stands for Bluetooth Qualification Body. It's the certification program run by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the organization that owns the Bluetooth trademark and specifications. Any product that uses Bluetooth technology must be qualified by the Bluetooth SIG before it can be marketed as "Bluetooth" or use the Bluetooth logo.
What it covers: All Bluetooth-enabled products, including Bluetooth gaming headsets, TWS earbuds, and Bluetooth speakers. The qualification process verifies that the product correctly implements the Bluetooth specification and is interoperable with other Bluetooth devices.
What you need to do:
- Become a member of the Bluetooth SIG (free for Adopter members, $7,500/year for Associate members)
- Test the product at a Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF)
- Submit the test results through the Bluetooth SIG's LaunchStudio portal

Common mistake: This is the certification that gets more shipments seized than any other. Customs authorities in the EU, US, and other markets actively check for BQB compliance on Bluetooth products. Selling a Bluetooth product without a valid QDID is trademark infringement (you're using the Bluetooth trademark without authorization) and can result in seizure, fines, and legal action from the Bluetooth SIG.

Important note: Northern Ireland remains under the CE marking system (due to the Northern Ireland Protocol). Products sold in Northern Ireland require CE marking, not UKCA.

- Sign a UK Declaration of Conformity

BIS (India)
What it is: BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. It's India's national standards body, responsible for certifying products sold in the Indian market. Electronics products, including gaming headsets, fall under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS).
What it covers: Products covered under the "Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012." For gaming headsets, the relevant standard is IS 13252 (Information Technology Equipment - Safety) and IS 16102 (Audio/Video Equipment Safety).

Also, BIS requires that the product be manufactured at a factory that's registered with BIS—you can't just test a sample and sell it. The factory itself must be in BIS's database.
ISO 9001 (Quality Management System)
What it is: ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management systems (QMS). It's not a product certification—it's a certification of the factory's quality management processes. A factory with ISO 9001 certification has demonstrated that it has documented processes for quality control, document control, corrective action, and continuous improvement.
What it covers: The factory's quality management system, not the product itself. ISO 9001 certification means the factory has systems in place to consistently produce products that meet customer requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.
What you need to do (as a buyer):
- Ask the factory for their ISO 9001 certificate
- Verify the certificate is valid (check the certification body's website or the IAF CertSearch database)
- During factory audits, check that the factory is actually following their documented quality processes (not just paying for a certificate)
Cost (for the factory): $3,000-$10,000 for initial certification, $1,500-$3,000 per year for surveillance audits.
Timeline (for the factory): 3-6 months to implement the QMS and pass the certification audit.
Validity: 3 years, with annual surveillance audits.
Common mistake: Treating ISO 9001 as a product quality guarantee. It's not. ISO 9001 means the factory has quality processes in place—it doesn't mean every product that comes off the line is perfect. A factory can be ISO 9001 certified and still produce defective products if the processes aren't followed properly. Use ISO 9001 as one data point in your factory evaluation, not as a substitute for actual product testing and quality inspection.

Third, BQB is required in every market for Bluetooth products. This is the one certification that's truly global—if your product has Bluetooth, you need BQB, period. There are no exceptions.
How to Save Money on Certifications
Certification costs can add up quickly, especially if you're selling in multiple markets. Here are strategies for keeping costs under control without sacrificing compliance.
1. Work With a Factory That Already Has Certifications
This is the single biggest money-saver. If the factory already has CE, FCC, RoHS, REACH, and BQB certifications for the product model you're buying, you don't need to pay for any of those certifications yourself. You just ask the factory for copies of the test reports and certificates, and you use them to demonstrate compliance.

There's no point spending $5,000 on Brazilian certification if you're not sure you can sell 100 units in Brazil.
5. Bundle Certification Costs Into Your Product Pricing
Certification is a cost of doing business, just like product cost, shipping, and advertising. Include the amortized certification cost in your product pricing. If you spend $5,000 on certifications and expect to sell 5,000 units, that's $1 per unit in certification cost. Factor it into your margin calculation from the beginning, and you won't be caught off guard.
The Certification Audit Checklist
Before you place an order with a factory, run through this certification checklist:
- Ask the factory for copies of all certifications for the specific product model you're buying
- Verify that the certificates are valid (check expiration dates, certification body websites)
- Confirm that the certificates cover the exact model (not just a similar model)
- For Bluetooth products: verify the QDID is valid and listed on the Bluetooth SIG EPL database
- For wireless products: confirm the FCC ID (US) or CE RED test report (EU) covers the specific radio module
- Ask for the RoHS and REACH test reports for the finished product (not just components)
- Confirm that the factory can provide a Declaration of Conformity with your brand name on it

A factory that can't provide clear, valid certification documentation is a factory you shouldn't be buying from. In 2026, certification compliance is non-negotiable for any factory that wants to export to major markets.
